An Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato has broken the record for being the most expensive British car ever to be sold at auction. The DB4GT Zagato was introduced in October 1960 at the London Motor Show. The DB4GT had been modified by Italian coachbuilder Zagato, making it lighter and more aerodynamic.
The plan was to produce 25 units, however production ceased after the 20th model was made. The Zagato was powered by a 3.7L straight six engine, producing 314BHP, a 0-60MPH time of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 154MPH.
One of the models recently went under the hammer at an RM Sotherby’s ‘Driven By Destruction’ auction in New York. The car in question was originally delivered to Australia, where it competed in several motorsport events. The car changed owners a further two times before being kept in storage for 20 years. In 1993, the vehicle was brought back to the UK, where some minor alterations were made, before being taken to concours events.
The car fetched £9.45 million at the auction in New York, beating the previous most expensive British vehicle to be sold, the McLaren F1, which sold for £8.8 million last year.
